Welcome to Dolenjska region
Destination Dolenjska, Bela krajina & Kočevko-ribniško – vibrant, green, sparkling, calm, sociable. Openly boastful and mysteriously sophisticated. A landscape of meadows and forests, pretty green rivers, a cradle of picturesque places and sincere, hospitable people.
Dolenjska or Lower Carniola is what we call the region with soft, rolling landscape that stretches from the Ljubljana basin to the Croatian border in the southeast. Well, not exactly; there are the Gorjanci hills that form a natural border between the central part of Dolenjska, and Bela Krajina, where the landscape gradually transforms as it continues into neighbouring Croatia. The border between Slovenia and Croatia is clearly delineated by the Kolpa River – the warmest Slovenian river, which is a popular tourist destination, especially in the summer. Whereas Dolenjska is covered with hills and alternating patches of picturesque fields and forests, which are interspersed with villages and hamlets, Bela krajina is much flatter and has certain Karst characteristics – the lowlands are primarily covered with forests, and the hillsides are dotted with vineyards that turn to a beautiful shade of golden brown in autumn.
